Debbie Gibson strongly established herself as a popular singer during the late 1980s. She was overshadowed by newer music artists but continued to make her music. Gibson was born on the 31st of August 1970 on Long Island. Her heritage includes German and Italian in addition to a little portion of Russian. She was the daughter of Diane Gibson and Joseph Gibson. She also has three older sisters. As a young girl she took piano lessons under Morton Estrin. She began her career in 1983, when she composed a song called "I Come From America" and then sending it to WOR for their song contest. She won the competition following which her mother converted the garage in their family into a recording studio. D.J. listened to the demo that she had sent to radio in the form of Only in My Dreams, another of her songs. A senior executive from Atlantic Records shared the song she wrote with her and it helped her to get the recording deal quickly. She then began to tour venues across and around the United States. Between 1986 and 1987, she was still touring and writing songs. Gibson's mother would accompany her on her club dates.
